Central America Fishing + Pack For A Purpose
The idea is very simple and easy to do – just save a little space in your luggage to bring supplies for projects we support you’ll make a huge difference in the lives of our local communities. Pack For A Purpose provides an easy way for you to give something back to your travel destination by showing your awareness, appreciation and support for its environment and people in need. Central America Fishing partners with Pack for a Purpose to support our local foundation, Lifting Hands, in our home town of San Jose, Costa Rica.
Located between downtown San Jose and the upscale suburb of Escazu, Lifting Hands has become a beacon of hope for the impoverished residents of the Bajo de los Anonos community. Here local residents can learn from and be motivated by volunteers like ourselves who share their time, expertise and resources with both children and adults. Lifting Hands primary focus is creating a safe and fun learning environment where school-aged children from 5-years to 17-years are taught various classes and workshops by 100% volunteers. These range from English classes, computers lessons, mathematics, arts, dance, yoga, cooking, swimming, physical education, Jiu Jitsu, and much more. Lifting Hands provides a healthy outlet that keeps the kids off the streets where negative influences can be around any corner in their impoverished community.
The parents of the children are also offered classes and workshops like on-going education, creating employment opportunities and teaching healthy family lifestyle practices. These adult workshops range from computer lessons, English classes, food preparation, and business development. In Los Anonos the average home has 10 people living in it, so Lifting Hands serves as a resource to help improve the quality of life for those who seek the opportunity.
How Can You Help? It’s Simple!
You can support our initiative with Lifting Hands by saving a bit of room in your luggage and bringing down supplies listed by Lifting Hands and/or any other donations you wish to contribute. If you have donations that aren’t on the ‘wish list’ they are most welcome as Lifting Hands runs “La Tiendita”, a little store where they sell donations to the local community at a low cost. The proceeds from La Tiendita are directly used to pay for expenses and repairs at the center. Whether it’s school supplies for the kids, toothbrushes and deodorant, sports equipment, or even old clothes & shoes you don’t wear anymore they are all much appreciated and put to good use here. Click here to see a list of supplies needed by Lifting Hands.
When you arrive to Costa Rica you’ll be met by our private transport to take you to your first destination. You can simply leave your supplies with our driver and they will get them to us here in San Jose. We’ll be happy to take a picture once we drop your donations off at Lifting Hands so you can see the smiles they created! By doing so you’ll be helping local community projects AND allocating space in your luggage on the way home for souvenirs – or your own fish fillets!
Not Traveling to Costa Rica? No Problem!
Even if you aren’t coming to Costa Rica you can still help out the local community at your next travel destination. Pack for a Purpose has operations in over 60 countries so even if your next vacation with us is to Panama, Belize, Nicaragua, or Guatemala we can find a local hotel that partners with Pack for a Purpose as well.
If you are traveling to Costa Rica and happen to have a night in San Jose let us know if you’d like to visit Lifting Hands personally. You can join one of our volunteer classes, hang out with the children, tour the Anonos community, and/or bring your donations directly to the foundation center.
We hope to continue adding more projects in all the countries we represent throughout Central America. We are proud to say that since 2017 our guests have already brought down over 300 lbs of donations!
Thank you for your support – we’ve seen first hand what a difference these donations can make!
