The Panama Canal Grand Slam – peacock bass, snook, and tarpon. Enjoy a week of fishing on one of the world’s modern marvels, which doubles as an incredibly scenic and productive fishery. Gatun Lake is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world and provides endless habitat to resident peacock bass and snook as well as tarpon that have come in from the Caribbean Coast. Fly fishing, trolling, or spin casting – it doesn’t get much more exotic than a grand slam on the Panama Canal.
Fly into Panama City, Panama where you will be met at the airport and taken to your waiting private transfer. You’ll spend your week in Panama’s vibrant capital city, which is also its largest. Stay at brand new Waldorf Astoria, a true 5-star hotel in every sense of the word. This is the first and only Waldorf in Latin America and it boasts a pool, spa, gym, beauty salon, business center, and one of the city’s best sushi restaurants. It also has a convenient location in the upscale banking district so you are a short walk or cheap taxi ride away from the best nightlife, casinos, and fine dining Panama City has to offer.
Let’s go fishing! You’ll be picked up early in the morning at your hotel for a full day of fishing on the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal was constructed between 1904-1914 by the United States by damning up the Chagres River. This formed Lake Gatun, which at 163 sq miles is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. A combination of rain forest covered islands, inlets, river mouths, and underwater forests provide plenty of habitat for peacock bass. Most peacock bass, known as ‘sargento’ in Spanish, weigh between 2-3 pounds but 7-10 pound trophies are caught on a regular basis.
Take a break from the fishing and use this day to get to know your new country. Take a full day tour of Panama City and the Panama Canal with our private bilingual guide. You’ll start off by touring Panama Viejo, the old ruins of the first Spanish settlements which date back to the 1500s. Next head over to the French colonial part of the city, Casco Antiguo, and revel in the architecture that led this to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy shopping and boutique eateries before heading to the last stop on your tour – the Panama Canal. You’ll take a very informative an interesting tour of the Miraflores Locks, one of three sets of locks that allow ships to transfer between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. See how they were built, how 100 year old technology still functions today, and actually watch 960 ft Panamax ships go through the locks in a matter of minutes.
Let’s go fishing! Spend another day on the lake with your guide on your quest for the Panama Canal Grand Slam. Your 23’ Hurricane Fundeck is the perfect boat for this kind of fishing as it offers comfortable seating, cover from the sun and rain (both needed on most days!), and two swivel fishing chairs and a casting platform on the bow. Large tarpon are often found in the canal passage itself, so you’ll have to watch out for 100,000 ton cargo ships between strikes!
Let’s go fishing! By now you’ve likely caught more than your share of peacock bass so it’s time to focus on the snook and tarpon to complete your grand slam. If they aren’t in Lake Gatun you can explore the Chagres River which offers even more habitat for the silver king.
Last day in Panama! Use this day as you please – shop, enjoy the spa and pool at the Waldorf, or set up another day tour. Your options from Panama City include an island tour in the Pacific, visiting the Embera Indians, the canopy zip-line tour, and visiting the Caribbean side of Panama and sites like Fort San Lorenzo and the city of Colon.
You will be picked up and taken back to the PTY Airport for your international flight home.
